Eco Jewelry Information: Recycled and Fairmined Gold

July 1, 2015 BY Alon Ben-Shoshan IN Diamond Industry

In the quest for ideal eco jewelry, gold can be a bit of roadblock. Since diamond is a crystal made of pure carbon, it doesn’t need to be mined. We can grown ethical diamonds in reactors. Gold and platinum, on the other hand, still require mining, and mining destroys the environment. Despite the efforts of valiant alchemists, we still haven’t found a way to turn lead into gold.

As part of our commitment to environmental responsibility, Diamond Foundry promotes the use of recycled precious metals in our Designers’ jewelry. Metal mining – gold mining in particular – is one of the most environmentally destructive types of mining, with 20 tons of ore required to produce enough gold for a single ring.

What are some of the issues with gold mining?

  • Water pollution and environmental devastation due to dirty gold mining practices
  • Poor safety standards for miners
  • Inhumane labor practices
  • Disregard for the rights and interests of indigenous peoples

What can be done?

We can choose recycled metals to decrease the global demand for newly mined gold. This will diminish the environmentally and socially destructive effects of dirty gold and other metal mining practices. Because precious metals can be recycled repeatedly with no degradation in quality, they are a naturally renewable resource. Choose recycled precious metals to protect the environment and reduce the demand for dirty gold.

Where do the recycled precious metals come from?

Reclaimed precious metals come from numerous post-consumer sources, including:

  • Existing jewelry
  • Industrial-use metals
  • Electronics components

Ethical Jewelry Practices

Recycled precious metals are an important component of Diamond Foundry’s commitment to the environment, but we also promote environmental responsibility throughout our Designers’ jewelry production process.

For example, employing vapor emissions cleaning systems and a rigorous processes of cleaning liquid emissions to prevent contaminants from being released into the environment.

Additionally, we are committed to responsible labor practices. Many jewelers outsource their production to countries where labor and environmental standards are weak or poorly enforced. While this may reduce cost, it often comes at the expense of product quality as well as worker health and safety.

All jewelry sold by Diamond Foundry is handcrafted in the United States and Europe under strict labor laws, typically within the specific designer’s shop.
